Supernatural Medicine

While medicines may be prescribed — even by angels — to men, that the effects of them are “natural” is not necessarily true, though it may appear to be so to the senses. In the book of Tobit we read:

1. Prescription

The angel Raphael told Tobit, “On the night [of your wedding] lay the liver of the fish on the fire, and the devil shall be driven away.” (Tobit 6:19)

2. Use

“And Tobias remembering the angel’s word, took out of his bag part of the liver, and laid it upon burning coals.” (Tobit 8:2)

3. Means

“Then the angel Raphael took the devil, and bound him in the desert of upper Egypt.” (Tobit 8:3)

Thus, even though the remedy prescribed was a natural one, the solution of the problem was by no means “natural”.

Is this how medicine truly works?
