The Greatness of Reason

“When I see the heavens, the work of your hands, the moon and the stars which you arranged, what is man that you should keep him in mind, mortal man that you care for him?

Yet you have made him little less than a god; with glory and honor you crowned him, gave him power over the works of your hands, put all things under his feet.

All of them, sheep and cattle, yes, even the savage beasts, birds of the air, and fish that make their way through the waters.”

The physical beauty and greatness of God’s creatures leave man as an a most unimpressive species. How can man compare with the sun, moon or stars? How can man compare with the power of the ox or the speed of birds? Man has no physical attribute greater than those of other creatures.

Yet, all creatures were made for man and man is superior to them all.

What makes man superior to all created things is that he alone possesses an eternal soul with understanding and free will. This understanding allows him to harness the power of the sun, use the moon as an instrument, employ the powers of all animals as instruments of his own will. A man, by reason, can corral and control a herd of cattle, can break and train a horse ten times his own weight, can bring thousands of acres of land under cultivation.

All of this by reason.

Yet, we see men boasting of their physical achievements and talking about training their bodies, which is ridiculous.

Our attention should be to the study of Reason itself, to the ordering of the mind, which is Rational Philosophy. By this, man perfects his greatest power and fulfills his potential.
